This Constitution was adopted at Wyandotte on July 29, 1859, and was ratified October 4, 1859, by a vote of 10,421 for to 5,530 against. (See Kansas Constitutional Convention, page 671 (1920); see also Laws of Kansas Territory, 1859, ch. 31, § 6, directing the submission to the qualified electors of the territory.)

Revisor's Note:
A proposition to amend Article 1 of the Kansas Constitution and repealing Article 8 was submitted to the qualified electors of the state on November 3, 1970 (L. 1970, ch. 347; H.C.R. 1026) and was adopted. This proposition to amend the Constitution was later held improperly submitted and void, see Moore v. Shanahan, 207 Kan. 1, 486 P.2d 506; 207 Kan. 645, 647, 658, 663, 669, 486 P.2d 506.
The 1972 proposition to revise Article 1 replaced Sections 1 through 16, inclusive, which formerly appeared under this Article. This proposition to amend the Constitution was held properly submitted and adopted, see Van Sickle v. Shanahan, 211 Kan. 284, 505 P.2d 1109.
